Many beginner kiters are surprised to discover that the hardest part of getting up on the board isn't the kite — it's the board itself. Putting your feet into the straps while floating in choppy water, holding the bar with one hand, and keeping the kite steady overhead is a genuine coordination challenge. This lesson isolates and solves that problem.
Board Familiarisation
We start on the beach with a dry walkthrough. You'll learn the anatomy of a twin-tip board — fins, foot pads, straps, rocker — and how to adjust the straps to fit your feet securely. Then we practise the water-start body position on land: board perpendicular to the wind, knees tucked to chest, arms extended, weight centred over the board's midpoint.
In the water, the challenge multiplies. You're floating, the current is moving you, the kite wants attention, and the board keeps drifting away. Your instructor will teach you the one-handed board grab, the knee-tuck foot entry, and how to position the board correctly relative to the wind before generating power. These micro-skills are what make or break your first water-start attempts.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
The most common mistake is looking down at the board instead of forward at the kite. The second is straightening your legs too early, which flattens the board and kills your edge. Your instructor will call out these errors in real time and give you specific corrections. By the end of the session, you'll be able to get your feet in the straps, assume the correct starting position, and hold it while the kite is overhead — all without panicking.
"Board handling was my nemesis. I could fly the kite perfectly, but the second I tried to get my feet in the straps I'd lose everything. This lesson fixed that completely — the beach drills made the water practice click." — Priya S., beginner student
This is the lesson that makes your first water start possible. Without solid board handling, you'll spend most of your riding time fumbling with straps instead of actually riding. Invest the time here and you'll progress twice as fast in the sessions that follow.
