Downwind Riding

Ride comfortably downwind to build confidence and mileage before you tackle upwind riding.

Before you learn to fight the wind and ride upwind, it's valuable to spend time riding with it. Downwind riding is the most natural and forgiving direction — the wind does most of the work, the kite is easy to manage, and you can focus entirely on board feel, balance, and building confidence. This session gives you the mileage you need to make upwind riding click later.

Riding with the Wind

Downwind riding teaches you to manage speed naturally. With the wind behind you, the apparent wind on the kite decreases, which means you need to keep the kite active and in the right part of the window to maintain power. Your instructor will show you how to read the wind angle, adjust your kite position, and use gentle sine-wave movements to keep consistent power flowing through long runs.

This is also the session where you'll start feeling truly comfortable on the board. Without the stress of trying to edge upwind, you can relax into the ride, feel how the board responds to weight shifts, and develop the subtle balance adjustments that become instinctive with practice. Many students say this is the most purely enjoyable lesson in the beginner programme.

Building Water Time

There's no substitute for time on the water. The more you ride, the more natural it feels. Downwind riding lets you rack up distance and minutes on the board quickly, building the kind of unconscious competence that makes everything else easier. Think of it as the "highway driving" of kitesurfing — easy conditions, long runs, steady practice.

"I loved the downwind lesson. It was the first time I could just relax and enjoy the ride without worrying about technique. I rode for what felt like ages, and by the end the board felt like an extension of my body." — James W., beginner kiter

This session sends you home with a bank of water time and a deep familiarity with your board. When you step into the upwind lessons, that comfort and confidence will make the transition dramatically smoother. Sometimes the fastest way forward is the easiest path first.
