Foil Transitions & Gybes

Link your foil runs together with smooth direction changes and controlled gybes at height.

Riding a foil in a straight line is exhilarating, but the real freedom comes when you can change direction without touching down. Foil transitions and gybes let you link continuous runs, riding back and forth without ever dropping off the foil. This lesson teaches the technique for smooth, controlled direction changes at flying height.

The Foil Gybe

A foil gybe is a downwind turn where you redirect the kite and carve the board through a turn while maintaining foil flight throughout. It requires coordination of kite, board, and body weight that's more precise than any twin-tip transition. You'll learn the entry speed, kite timing, weight transfer, and the critical moment of switching your feet as the board comes around.

The biggest challenge in foil gybes is maintaining height through the turn. As you change direction, the apparent wind drops and the foil loses lift. You need to manage speed through the turn, keep the kite moving to generate power, and use subtle front-foot pressure to prevent the foil from breaching or touching down. Your instructor will break this into phases, with each phase drilled until it's consistent.

Tacking and Continuous Riding

Beyond the gybe, we introduce the foil tack — an upwind turn that's the foiling equivalent of a sailing tack. Tacking on a foil is considered more difficult than gybing because you pass through the wind with minimal speed, requiring precise timing and weight management to stay flying. Your instructor will demonstrate the technique and coach you through progressive attempts.

"Linking foil gybes into continuous riding was the moment foiling went from 'cool novelty' to 'primary discipline' for me. The feeling of carving through a gybe on the foil, staying up, and accelerating away is silky smooth. It took the full lesson to get consistent, but every failed attempt taught me something." — Max D., dedicated foiler

Transitions are what make foiling truly viable as a riding discipline. Without them, you're limited to one-directional runs followed by awkward stop-and-restart sequences. With them, you can ride continuously for as long as the wind holds. This lesson is the key that unlocks that freedom, turning foiling from an impressive novelty into a complete riding experience.
