Jumping Fundamentals

Leave the water for the first time with a controlled kite-assisted jump and land back cleanly.

There's a reason jumping is what most people picture when they think of kitesurfing — it's spectacular, exhilarating, and surprisingly accessible once you have solid riding fundamentals. This lesson takes you from flat-water rider to airborne kiter with a methodical, safety-first approach that builds confidence at every stage.

The Pop and Send

A kitesurfing jump has two power sources: the "pop" from your board (loading your edge and releasing it explosively) and the "send" from your kite (steering it rapidly overhead to generate vertical lift). Your instructor will teach these separately before combining them. First, you'll practise loading and releasing your edge without sending the kite — getting small hops from board pop alone. Then you'll practise sending the kite from a standstill to feel the lift.

When you combine the two, the result is immediate: you'll leave the water. Your first jumps will be low — a metre or less — but the sensation of being airborne with a kite is unlike anything else. The wind holds you up, time seems to slow, and for a moment you're genuinely flying. It's the feeling that hooks kiters for life.

Landing Safely

What goes up must come down, and landing well is what keeps you riding (and uninjured). You'll learn to redirect the kite forward during descent to generate a forward pull that softens the landing, absorb impact through your knees, and ride out of the landing rather than sinking. We cover both clean landings and bail-out techniques for when things don't go to plan.

"My first jump was maybe half a metre, but I screamed like I'd cleared a building. By the end of the session I was getting consistent metre-high jumps and landing clean. The progression was incredible — and the instructor's radio coaching made me feel safe the whole time." — Rachel N., first-time jumper

This session is pure joy. You'll go home with the ability to leave the water, fly for a moment, and land back on your board — and you'll be counting the hours until you can do it again. Jumping is the beginning of a whole new chapter in your kitesurfing journey, and it starts here.
