Light Wind Riding

Maximise your time on the water by learning to ride efficiently when the wind drops below ideal.

In the UK, perfect wind days are precious and unpredictable. Light wind riding skills double the number of days you can kite each year by teaching you to ride efficiently when the wind drops below what you'd normally consider rideable. Instead of sitting on the beach watching marginal forecasts, you'll be on the water making the most of every breath of wind.

Kite Selection and Rigging

Light wind riding starts before you even hit the water. You'll learn the principles of kite sizing for light wind — going bigger, obviously, but also understanding how different kite profiles and aspect ratios perform when the wind is marginal. Your instructor will discuss when to rig your largest kite, when a foil kite might be appropriate, and the limitations of each setup.

Rigging adjustments matter more in light wind than in any other condition. A slightly shorter bar throw, adjusted bridle settings, and the right line lengths can squeeze extra performance from your kite when every ounce of power counts. You'll learn these adjustments and understand why they work.

Riding Technique for Light Wind

On the water, light wind riding demands a different approach. You'll learn to generate apparent wind through board speed — the faster you go, the more wind the kite feels, even if the actual wind hasn't changed. This means keeping the kite moving actively, using efficient sine-wave patterns, and maintaining speed through transitions rather than stopping and restarting.

"Light wind riding transformed my kiting calendar. I used to need 18+ knots to even consider going out. Now I'm comfortable in 12 knots on a big kite, and I kite at least twice as many days per season. The techniques are subtle but they make a massive difference." — Kate R., all-conditions rider
Kiter riding efficiently in light wind conditions

This session is a game-changer for UK-based kiters. Our wind is often marginal, and the riders who enjoy the sport most are the ones who can make the most of what's available. Learn to ride light wind and you'll never look at a 12-knot forecast with disappointment again — you'll see an invitation.
