The Duotone Sky Start DST is the wingfoil beginner board that makes getting started as easy as possible. With 170 litres of volume, an extended outline and rugged Dura Shield Technology (DST), it delivers exactly the security your first foiling experiences need, from your first time kneeling to your first controlled flight.

Is the Duotone Sky Start DST suitable for absolute Wing Foil beginners?

Yes, the Sky Start DST is built for exactly that. It removes the typical moments of frustration in every learning phase, because its shape is deliberately optimised for stability and controlled take-off's.

  • In the very first phase (kneeling & first feel): The width of 31.5''/80 cm provides high tilt stability, so you can kneel calmly on the board and focus on wing handling without constantly correcting your balance.
  • When standing up (from kneeling to standing): This is where the new step-tail helps: it makes it easier to move up on the board and prevents the tail from tipping away as you get up. The optical stance references on the deck pad show you the ideal foot position, helping you avoid the classic beginner mistake of standing too far forward or too far back.
  • On your first take-off: The extended outline and volume distribution create a smooth, predictable transition from gliding to flying, the board doesn't shoot uncontrollably onto the foil but lifts off evenly.
  • As you progress: Even as you get more confident, the Sky Start DST stays agile enough to practise your first gybes and tacks, before you eventually move to a smaller freeride board.

Volume guide: How much buoyancy does a Wing Foil board for beginners need?

As a rule of thumb for absolute beginners: body weight (in kg) + 40–50 litres. That much volume gives you enough reserve to stand stably and still take off early.

  • Rule of thumb: body weight + 40–50 litres of reserve for absolute beginners
  • 60–75 kg: 100–125 litres, lots of reserve, extremely stable and forgiving
  • 90 kg: 130–140 litres, comfortable buffer and effortless gliding
  • 100 kg: 145–155 litres, stable learning platform
  • Up to 120 kg: 160–170 litres

In short: Better a bit more volume for learning. The 170 litres of the Sky Start DST give you maximum security in the phase where you need it most.

Duotone Sky Start vs. Sky Free: What is the difference?

Both boards bring you into the Duotone Wing Foiling line-up but with a clearly different focus.

  • Sky Start DST → beginners & schools · maximum stability · DST construction · approx. 11.1 kg · very easy learning curve
  • Sky Free → advancing riders · sportier agility · SLS construction · lighter · for riders who already fly
  • Your decision aid: If you want to first get safely onto the foil at all, the Sky Start DST is the right choice. If you already fly and are looking for tighter turns, less volume and a sportier feel, the Sky Free (or a performance-oriented shape) is the next logical step.

Dura Shield Technology: How rugged is the DST construction?

Especially in the learning phase, your board is constantly in contact with the dock, foil or ground - that's exactly what the DST construction was developed for. The scratch- and impact-resistant top-sheet construction protects the entire board from knocks and is deliberately built for hard use in schools and centers.

The advantages of DST construction compared with Vacuum Sandwich and SLS Technology:

  • More rugged for the learning phase: While Vacuum Sandwich Technology and SLS Technology are more focused on low weight, performance and direct feedback, DST is deliberately optimised for maximum durability in beginner and school use.
  • High dent and scratch resistance: ideal for typical beginner situations such as dock contact, transport, beach starts or first rough mast contacts.
  • Durability for intensive use: developed for frequent sessions, changing riders and hard use in schools and centers.
  • Worry-free learning: the rugged outer shell takes away your fear of the first ding. You focus on riding, not on the material.

Key features

  • Highly increased stability — Offers a stable platform for beginners to gain confidence quickly.
  • Very smooth transition from glide to flight — Facilitates easy learning with seamless transitions.
  • Strong construction built for years of progression (DST): — Incorporates scratch and ding resistant Dura Shield technology for long lasting durability.

  • Size: 7'4''
  • Volume: 170 l
