We first visited the area in 2014 and had such a fantastic time we decided to continue taking coaching trips for the foreseeable future. The conditions are fantastic for both beginners and waves. During the windy season (November – May) the wind blows all the time, all day and all night. The trade winds blow from the north east and just don’t stop. Our instructor Gregorio called into the port last winter while sailing back from South Africa and said he’s never experienced anything like it around the world….ideal for a weeks break kitesurfing then!
Cape Verde is the great destination for a Kitesurfing holiday during the winter months as it is the ONLY wind reliable, hot, destination just a short haul flight from the UK.
The advantage of Cape Verde over many other windy kitesurfing resorts is there are other activities to partake in should you need a break away from the wind or water. It offers scuba diving, world class waves for surfing, big game deep sea angling, 4 x 4 offroad / quadbiking, and even a reasonable night life for those who may wish to take advantage of the all inclusive alcoholic drinks!
About Cape Verde & Santa Maria –
Santa Maria has a population of 15,000 and growing. This was a former salt working village but due to its amazing beach is now more known as a windsurf/kitesurf hotspot. From here you can easily access other beaches on both sides of the island.
Cape Verde is pleasant year-round. Thanks to cooling ocean currents and trade winds, Cape Verde has the lowest temperatures of any country in West Africa, and also some of the most moderate, ranging from a minimum night-time average of 19°C in February to a maximum daytime average of 29°C from May to November. From December to March you may need a sweater in the evenings, especially at higher altitudes. Winter months are also marked strong winds, which can blow in dust all the way from the Sahara.
The coaching –
A selection of our instructors will be heading out on the trip to train and coach for 5 of the 6 days. Whether you want to learn how to ride upwind, catch your first wave, land your first powered handlepass or boost that huge megaloop you’ve been wanting to do for years, they can help you out. The sessions will be filmed and photographed so it can be analysed in the evenings to help with progression. There will also be tuning sessions on how to get the most from your equipment in the varying conditions (which most people really underestimate and ignore) along with advanced safety techniques and general fun stuff! We’re here to not only help you improve your riding but have a great holiday.
The accommodation –
Situated on the white sands of Santa Maria beach the Oasis Belorizonte is a well established hotel with great facilities.
The hotel is mainly composed of bungalow type properties built on the beach between small lawns and terraces inviting you to relax and enjoy the climate. Minutes from the amenities of Santa Maria, Belorizonte is perfectly placed for a stroll along the promenade to visit the local shops, bars and restaurants and of course take full advantage of the excellent expanse of beach right on your doorstep.
Just 20 minutes transfer from Sal airport and 5 minutes from the kitesurfing beach
As mentioned above, the hotel is all inclusive. Belorizonte offers great facilities including
– 3 swimming pools, jacuzzi, tennis court, gym, games room, towel service, sun beds / parasols, currency exchange, 24 hour reception, air conditioning, room safes, satellite TV and a minibar – what else do you need?!
CAPE VERDE ENTRY REQUIRMENTS
British Passport holder may buy a tourist visa on arrival at a cost of 25 euros. Other passport holders should consult their respective consulates.
You will need to ensure you have correct documentation for your holiday including a full passport valid for the minimum period of 6 months beyond your planned return date.
CAPE VERDE TRAVEL MONEY
The unit of currency is the Cape Verde escudo (CVE), divided into 100 centavos. It’s not a hard currency, but it’s stable; in January 2002, it was pegged to the euro. Most businesses also accept US dollars and euros. Banks are found in all the main towns and even some of the smaller ones, and most have ATMs that accept bankcards and Visa. Many also change travellers cheques and cash in all the main currencies (except the West African CFA). Many also give cash advances with a Visa card. Credit cards are accepted only in very upmarket establishments. The best exchange we have experienced in the past is to withdraw money from an ATM and paying with escudo works out cheaper than Euros.
