Lesson duration: 2 Hours

Cost: £49

New to kitesports? The Kitesurf Centre’s two hour Introduction to Kitesports lesson is ideal for those who have never tried kiting before. Initially covering a short safety and theory presentation before heading straight onto the beach to put it all into practise, the lesson will cover the basics of kite flying techniques you use in kitesports such as kitebuggyinglandboarding and kitesurfing.

Introduction to Kitesports Course Outline

  • Introduction, theory and safety
  • Setup, launching and landing
  • Powerkite flying
  • Basic flying techniques
  • Foil kite / LEI kite flying
  • Advanced flying techniques

All the equipment is provided in the lesson, and can be modified to suit the wind conditions and size of the kite flyer – another reason this activity is perfect for family groups!

Part 1 – Introduction, Setup, Launching & Landing

Powerkite Launch

After a quick talk through the basic theory and safety of kite flying, you’ll head down on the beach to learn how to setup, launch and land the kites. This first step of your journey into kite flying is very important, and will help make sure you’re as safe as possible when kiting. Powerkites are simple and easy to set up and launch, and have a built in safety system which when activated removes all the power from the kite – this makes the whole process super easy and safe – even for children!

Once that’s done it’s time to try it for yourself and launch the kite in the air to really kick off the fun! In pairs, you’ll launch the kites and learn how to control them whilst they’re in their air in part 2.

Part 2 – Basic Powerkite Flying Techniques

Powerkiting

With the kite in the air, it’s time to put into effect everything you learn in the theory talk. See and feel how the kite pulls as it flies through the power zone, generate power with figure of 8 movements and learn how to control the kite steadily through different parts of the wind window.

These static flying exercises form the basis for all kitesports. Good kite control is 80% of being a good kitebuggier, landboarder or kitesurfer, so if you ever choose to progress onto these, you’ll have the perfect foundation for them.

Part 3 – LEI Flying and Advanced Flying Techniques

Beach LEI Flying

Once you’ve covered the basic flying techniques and learnt how to handle the powerkites, you can move onto the larger LEI or foil kites and try out more advanced flying techniques such as controlling the kite with one hand and flying without looking.

With these larger more powerful kites, you’ll really begin to feel the pull and how much fun it is to harness the power of the wind.

Lesson & Hire Options

If you’re not ready for the fun to stop, why not speak to your instructor or centre management about upgrading your lesson to a kitebuggy lesson (£10 extra pp) or a landboarding lesson (£40 extra pp). You can choose to do this in advance or when signing in for the lesson on the day.

After your lesson, you can hire the powerkites from our school for just £10 per hour (£30 per day), so the fun can continue for as long as you like! If you’ve upgraded to the kitebuggy or landboard lesson, you can hire the complete setup for £15 per hour (£45 per day).

If you’d like to really see how much much fun kiting can be and head out into the water, after completing your powerkiting lesson you can pick up an exclusive voucher for money off our 3 Day Kitesurfing Course!

As this is a group lesson, you will be in a group of up to 6 people. If on the day there are only 1 or 2 people, the lesson will be run shorter, to the equivalent of the monetary value for private tuition.

All of the equipment is provided.

Bring a study pair of shoes, sunglasses, sun cream and warm clothing if it is cold.

Lesson Details

Kitesurfing is one of the newest and most exciting watersports. Combining controlling the kite as it flies through the air with steering the board as it skims across the water, it’s a sport possible entirely because of the elements. Initially covering basic theory, site assessments and safety before going onto powerkite flying and inflatable kite flying, the 1 Day course is a great introduction to the world of kitesports.

If you’d like to read a blog written about one student’s experience of Day 1, click here.

1 Day Course Outline

  • Introduction, theory and site assessments
  • The fundamentals of kitesurfing – wind and sea conditions
  • Power kite flying
  • Static flying exercises
  • Kitesurfing kite setup
  • Safe launching & landing procedures & pre-flight checks
  • Kitesurfing kite flying with harnesses
  • Controlled bodydragging*
  • Emergency pack down / self rescue techniques
  • Debrief and handouts

Part 1 – Theory, Safety and Powerkite Flying

Kitesurfing, whilst a lot of fun, is still an extreme sport, so it must be learnt and taught properly. The lesson begins with a brief run through of the the fundamentals of kitesurfing safety and theory so you fully understand the sport and have a safe and enjoyable lesson.

Once you’ve covered the safety and theory, you’ll head to the beach to do a site assessment and set up the powerkites. After this, it’s time to fly them!

You’ll put your theoretical knowledge of kite flying to the test as you learn to steer and loop the kite through the air. These static flying exercises give you experience in the most important part of kitesurfing – kite control. 80% of being a good kitesurfer is mastering kite control, so this is a really important part.

Part 2 – LEI Kite Setup & Flying

After a short break, you’ll collect your LEI (Leading Edge Inflatable) kitesurfing kites, change into wetsuits and head back down to the beach.

You’ll learn all about how to set up, launch and land the kitesurfing kites in the safest way possible depending on the beach on you’re on, and what things you need to look out for. You’ll also learn to use the three safety steps. All of this is done through demonstration and practise, give you the change to actively see and feel how it all works.

Part 3 – Controlled Bodydragging

Now you’ve covered the safety, theory and setup, it’s time to head out into the water! Kitted up in wetsuits, harnesses, buoyancy aids and helmets (all included in the lesson price), you’ll put your kite skills to the test as you learn to bodydrag through the water.

Don’t worry – it’s not as scary as it sounds! Steering and diving the kite in a controlled way through the air allows you to glide through the water in any direction. Going through this really helps you to understand the way your kite works, reacts and how it feels.

Part 4 – Self Rescue and Pack Downs

At the end of the lesson the instructor will demonstrate am “emergency packdown” and go through how you can self-rescue in difficult situations, as well as running through example scenarios of ways to get back to land safely.

As it’s a vital part of being a safe and independent kitesurfer, each student will get the chance to go through the self-rescue procedure themselves.

Part 5 – Lesson Debrief

At the end of the lesson, you’ll head back to The Kitesurf Centre’s main building for an end of session debrief, where you’ll receive your BKSA kiteboarder card and your log book. The instructor will mark off on your card and log book which levels you’ve achieved. If you’re back the next day, the instructor will let you know the plan for the next day and give you some exercises to practise before you come back. The instructor will also send you a message in your booking account with anything you need to cover, post session recaps and any recommendations they’ve given. This is super useful in the future if you decide to come back another day!

All of the equipment is provided and the course is 80% practical and brilliant fun!

Day 2 starts with a quick recap of the safety and theory you covered in Day 1, including site assessments and the setting up of the kitesurf kite.

You’ll get the chance to set up the kite on your own this time, showing the instructor what you’ve remembered from Day 1 and putting it into practise.

Once this is done you’ll head straight out to the water to cover any of the body drags you didn’t complete on Day 1.

Part 2 – Advanced Bodydragging

2 day kitesurfing course part 2

As soon as you’ve recapped the setup, it’s time to head out into the water to go through the rest of the bodydrags. In total, you’ll cover the following bodydrags:

  • Downwind
  • Directional
  • Upwind

The upwind bodydrag is one of the most useful skills to learn as a kiter, if you ever lose your board or get out of your depth, it’s the best way to get back to it.

Part 3 – Board Start Theory & Practise

Once you’ve completed all of the bodydrags and have gained a sufficient level of kite control, it’s time to introduce you to the board.

Our unique board start trainer is a fantastic way to get you used to the movements you need to go through in order to board start. It’s a great opportunity to practise without the kite as there’s a lot to do and it’ll take a few attempts!

Once you’ve had a few attempts, it’s time to head back into the water and try it for real! It might take a few attempts, but there’s plenty of time for you to try and before you know it you’ll be up and riding along!

Part 4 – Lesson Debrief

At the end of the lesson, you’ll head back to The Kitesurf Centre’s main building for an end of session debrief, where you’ll receive your BKSA kiteboarder card and your log book. The instructor will mark off on your card and log book which levels you’ve achieved. If you’re back the next day, the instructor will let you know the plan for the next day and give you some individual exercises to practise before you come back. The instructor will also send you a message in your booking account with anything you need to cover, post session recaps and any recommendations they’ve given. This is super useful in the future if you decide to come back another day!

Course Outline

The 3 Day course covers the same as the one and two day courses, with the addition and further practise of the following skills on Day 3:

  • Competent board starts
  • Speed control with board edging
  • Control amongst waves
  • Initiating steering and turns
  • Advanced weather and tide analysis
  • Advanced site assessments

Part 1 – Consistent Board Starts & Controlled Runs

The main focus of Day 3 is to perfect your board start and begin to introduce longer, controlled runs. Once this is mastered, you’ll begin to learn how to control your speed, start to turn and even ride upwind.

Technique & Stance: Once you’re up and riding, you can begin to work on your stance, body position and balance to help give you more control, feel more comfortable and look cool when kiting.

Controlled Runs: Alongside mastering board starts and producing long, controlled runs whilst keeping constant power from the kite, you’ll start to learn board edge control with the aim to ride upwind.

Slide Turns: Once you’ve learned to ride, it’s time to learn how to come back! With the additional time in the water that Day 3 offers, you can learn to control the board better and begin linking the runs you do by initiating some turns, sliding the board around and continuing on your way.

Part 2 – Lesson Debrief

At the end of the lesson, you’ll head back to The Kitesurf Centre’s main building for an end of session debrief, where you’ll receive your BKSA kiteboarder card and your log book. The instructor will mark off on your card and log book which levels you’ve achieved. If you’re back the next day, the instructor will let you know the plan for the next day and give you some individual exercises to practise before you come back. The instructor will also send you a message in your booking account with anything you need to cover, post session recaps and any recommendations they’ve given. This is super useful in the future if you decide to come back another day!

You’ll also receive a handout pack with exclusive packages for students and voucher with money towards an equipment package. The instructor will go through the equipment with you individually offering recommendations and giving you the opportunity to customise the package.

Day 3

Day 3 is the day you get on the board – the most exciting part of the course and the bit you’ve all been waiting for! First going through the basic steps of board starts with our simulator, you’ll then head out in the water for an entire day of practising getting up on the board and doing your first rides with prolonged power delivery from the kite. Feeling the wind on your face as you skim across the water and the joy it brings you is the culmination of three days of effort from you. There’s no feeling like it!

FAQs

As this is a group lesson, you will be in a group of up to 4 people. If on the day there are only 1 or 2 people, the lesson will be run shorter, to the equivalent of the monetary value for private tuition.

All of the equipment is provided.

The kite has been developed to offer a perfect balance between speed and stability, so riders get challenged when flying the kite but will not struggle to keep the kite in the air.

Features

  • Low-Medium Aspect ratio with specially developed profile – The aspect ratio of the Impulse TR ensures a high stability and used friendliness. The profile used in the Impulse TR ensures a smooth flying speed and power across the whole wind window.
  • Innovative cross-vents – The profiles contain carefully placed cross-vents to ensure all the cells of the kite to fill with air quickly improving stability and (re)launch. The cross-vents are prone to tearing in hard crashes so Peter Lynn has Created an innovative design to cope with the heavy loads the cross vents sometimes endure. These uniquely shaped cross vernts are muc tougher than standard cross vent design and are sure to set a new standard.
  • High quality fabrics – With a smooth 40D Mirai top and bottom skin the deck shape is smooth, light and extremely durable. The 70D cell wall profiles ensure maximum durability.
  • Reinforced air intakes and bridle points – The air intakes are reinforced with webbing, the bridle points are connected to the profiles with a double stitched seam, increasing durability.
  • Efficient Dyneema® Bridle – While being very responsive and direct the stitched Dyneema® bridle is kept to an absolute minimum to increase performance and reduce tangles.
  • Dirt channel & Velcro dirt-outs – Sand and dirt can easily be removed from the kite by using the Velcro dirt-outs in the wingtips. The dirt can move towards the tips via the dirt channel along the trailing edge.
  • Velcro bridle loop – The Velcro Bridle loop secures your bridle and prevents it from getting tangled when packing up.
  • Dyneema® Flying lines attached to the kite and bar – Dyneema® flying lines ensure minimum drag and stretch, making the kite more responsive. These high quality lines are already attached to the kite and bar, so you are ready to start flying right away!
  • Life line – The Impulse TR features a setup with two flying lines and a centre line, called the Life line. This extra line makes a very easy relaunch possible and is part of the safety system.
  • Trainer bar or handles with safety system – The Trainer bar pr handles are designed especially for the Impulse TR, making the kite package plug and play. The safety system allows you to instantly lose all power from the kite without losing the kite itself.
